New England hiker kills rabid coyote with his own hands following an attack in the woods 

Health officials in New England confirm a coyote attacked two people in Rhode Island.

The attacks occurred on Feb. 8 and Feb. 9 in separate wooded areas, about six miles apart.

The most recent attack happened on Feb. 9 in Johnston, involving a man walking in the woods

The coyote bit the man's leg, prompting him to kill the animal in self-defense. 

Johnston Police Department Chief Mark A. confirmed the incident.

The hiker managed to subdue the coyote by pinning it down and suffocating it.

The man sustained a leg wound but was expected to recover after receiving treatment at a hospital. 

State health laboratories confirmed the coyote tested positive for rabies.
