Alexei Navalny, a longtime thorn in Russian President Vladimir Putin's side, dies in jail 

Alexei Navalny, a vocal critic of Russian President Putin, has reportedly died in a maximum-security prison in the Arctic Circle. 

Navalny, 47, became unwell and lost consciousness after going for a walk, according to the Federal Penitentiary Service.

The cause of Navalny's death has not been specified; attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.

The Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov claimed to have no information about Navalny's death. 

Vice President Kamala Harris condemned Navalny's reported death, attributing it to Putin's brutality, during the Munich Security Conference.

Navalny had been a persistent critic of Putin for over a decade, investigating the wealth of the Russian leader and his inner circle.

In 2018, Navalny was barred from running for president; two years later, he was poisoned with a nerve agent while in Siberia.
